Meters and meter readings (shared apartment rental)

Make the selection "Meters and meter readings" if a corresponding meter for heating consumption and a meter for hot water consumption is installed for each unit (also for the shared unit), and you have the respective meter readings.

It is important that you have taken an interim reading of the meter readings every time you change tenants in the shared apartment so that the consumption can be automatically distributed over the individual periods.

Confirm your entry by clicking on "Continue" to be able to enter the respective consumption on the next page.

You will now see a list of all individual WG billing units.

Immodio automatically creates a shared apartment billing unit as soon as there is a change of tenant within a shared apartment tenancy — i.e. when a resident moves out, a new resident moves in or a room is temporarily empty.

Example: Sebastian, Amelie and Patrick have been living together in a three-room shared apartment since 01.01.2026. Sebastian is moving out of his shared room on 01.07.2026. On 01.08.2026, Julia will move into the shared apartment.

In this case, Immodio automatically creates three WG billing units:

1. WG settlement unit from 01.01.2026 to 30.06.2026 Residents: Sebastian, Amelie and Patrick

2. WG settlement unit from 01.07.2026 to 31.07.2026 Residents: Amelie, Patrick and an empty room

3. WG settlement unit from 01.08.2026 Residents: Amelie, Patrick and Julia

It is important that you take an interim reading of all relevant meters every time you change tenants and then enter them into Immodio. On this basis, Immodio automatically distributes the costs incurred to the respective WG billing units.

Immodio then creates a separate operating cost statement for each flatmate, in which the cost shares for the respective period of use are taken into account.

Total consumption

In the first step, enter the respective total water consumption. To do this, click on "Enter consumption" in the "Total consumption" area.

What is meant here is the hot water consumption of the entire building.

You now have the choice of whether the heating of the heating and hot water is done via two separate systems (e.g. in the case of central heating, where e.g. electric instantaneous water heaters are installed in the individual units to heat the hot water) or whether the heating of the heating and hot water is done via the same system.

Calibration of meters

If billing is based on meter readings, the meters must in principle be usable under calibration law. According to § 37 MessEG, measuring instruments may not be used uncalibrated after the expiry of the calibration period.

For water meters, the calibration period according to § 34 MessEV in conjunction with Annex 7 MessEV is generally 6 years.
