# Water consumption

In this step you define how water consumption is to be allocated across the individual units.

If **a water meter exists for every unit** and **all meter readings were recorded** for the settlement period, consumption can be calculated precisely from the respective meter readings. The costs incurred are then allocated according to the actual consumption of the individual units.

If, on the other hand, **no water meter exists for at least one unit** or **at least one meter reading was not taken**, a complete determination of consumption is not possible. In that case choose allocation by **square metres and pro rata time**. The costs incurred are then allocated to the units on the basis of the living space and the respective periods of use.

Legal background: operating costs are generally allocated by living space unless otherwise agreed. Where consumption is recorded, a measure should be used that takes account of the differing consumption. According to case law, however, there is no obligation to allocate by consumption as long as not all apartments are fitted with water meters.
